Snow piles also shade the pavement beside them, which means the melt refreezes there every night; a stack in the wrong corner manufactures ice all season long.

Sequence matters

Drive lanes and fire routes first, then entrances and accessible spaces, then the far corners. Fire routes are not a courtesy; blocked ones draw orders and fines, and they are the first thing an inspector checks after a big storm. Accessible parking deserves the same priority, both because it is the law and because those users have the least margin for a snowbank between the car and the door.

Walkways and building entrances need their own crew with their own equipment, because a plow truck cannot do a storefront apron. Ice is the second shift

A cleared lot refreezes by morning. Ask how your contractor decides application rates; more salt is not the answer, the right salt at the right time is, and over-application quietly destroys the concrete and the beds you will repair in May.

Think past the winter

Where snow sits is where spring damage shows: crushed curbs, gouged islands, dead turf, and potholes where meltwater cycled through the cracks. Stakes along curb lines cost pennies and save thousands, and a fall walk-through that patches pavement before it disappears under snow pays for itself by April.

One more habit separates the well-run lots: a mid-season review. By late January the stacks are real, the traffic patterns have shown themselves, and ten minutes walking the lot with your contractor catches the corner that needs hauling and the crosswalk that needs more salt before February tests both.
